This project juxtaposes the escape of Syrian refugees and the history of refugees from China to Hong Kong in the 60s and 70s. In the framework of this project, the history of Hong Kong “Freedom Swimmers” in the 60s and 70s is presented, and the life of Syrian refugees are presented as illustrations. This juxtaposition hopes to reveal the familiar and the unfamiliar situations that refugees face in different eras and locations. Most importantly, how we could relate ourselves to the refugees by understanding the issues of giving and taking.

Seminar und Symposium “Über die Grenze”, SS 2016
26.05 - 28.05.2016

The exhibition "How about the other 80% you forgot?" investigates the life between important memories, those redundant and daily life in the distant past that we may unaware of. However, memories are motionless and they reside in space, especially when we decide to move out of it and revisit the space after a long time, we could see those daily life in the past vividly. By depicting and washing a deteriorated house, which was abandoned since its owners had emigrated, we would be able to find out how memory in the distant past exists in present.

“How about the other 80% you forgot?”

LANDSKRONA FOTO RESIDENCY 2016

ELVA LAI

The Landskrona Foto Resident 2016 is artist Elva Lai from Hong Kong. The jury’s motivation:
Elva Lai (Ming Chu) was born in China in 1989, but grew up in Hong Kong. She is educated in Hong Kong, the United States and is currently Meisterschüler at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. Thus she has a broad education, where photography plays a substantial and important role. It can be about the context in which her work is presented, but foremost it is about time and history. Her journey from China to Hong Kong has given her a special relationship with migration and memory. What is the meaning behind the memories of the past? When does a memory become a story? In her art Lai combines her work with found photographs. These can come from her family photo album, details from life before migration that materialize the memories. What do they mean now? How can one merge then and now? Is it even possible? Elva Lai’s work is a fascinating meeting of materials full of excitement, history, absence, longing and wonder.

The Landskrona Foto Residency Program received 82 applications from 38 different countries. The jury consisted of Jenny Nordquist, Jenny Lindhe and Thomas Millroth.
